What is the Compeer Program?
"Compeer" means a companion who is also a peer or equal. Loneliness, failure, fear, and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer mental illness. A caring friend can help to restore some joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both.
Where did the Program Originate?
The Compeer Program originated in Rochester, New York, in 1973 and has been known as Compeer since 1977. There have been over 25,000 relationships during this time, referrals coming from hundreds of therapists, agencies, and private practices. Compeer was chosen as a model program by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1982 and 1983 and received a grant to encourage the development of similar programs throughout the nation. Currently, there are over
115 programs in the Compeer network in the United States, Canada, and
Australia. Click here to

How does the Compeer Program Work?
Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of four hours a month for at least a year. Many volunteers extend their commitment past one year and spend more time than the minimum time commitment with their friends. Volunteers receive four hours of training from Compeer staff. The volunteers meet with the referring therapist and receive continuing support from the staff of Compeer. Volunteers are asked to send brief monthly reports to the Compeer office. On-going education and support for volunteers is provided by bi-monthly information groups, which meet to discuss problems and share ideas.
Therapists recommend persons for the program, provide initial consultation with the volunteer, and are available for back-up support. They receive a copy of the volunteer's monthly report. Therapists also evaluate the program yearly or at the termination of their referral in the program. The Compeer Program is regarded as an adjunct to therapy. The Compeer volunteer fills the gap that may occur between the treatment services provided and the absence of an adequate natural support system by family and friends.
The Compeer staff provides
community and professional education about Compeer, recruits volunteers and referrals, engages in public relations activities, organizes training, and provides continuing support for the Compeer friendship. The International Affiliation of Compeer Programs
(IACP) is funded through foundation and corporate grants and fees from member programs. Individual affiliate Compeer programs are funded in a variety of ways, from private, corporate and philanthropic contributions, to government funding, United Way, and/or mental health agencies.
