Calendar of Events

January 21st & February 3rd, 2004 ~ Training for New Compeer Volunteers ~ Volunteer as an individual, a couple, or as an adult Sunday School Class.Take the next step and apply to become a Compeer volunteer; then attend one of the above half-day trainings for new volunteers at the Alley Family Center, 1126 Walnut Street, Lebanon.  No special education or clinical experience required.  Pre-registration is required for attendance at one of the evening training session scheduled from 6:00 to 9:45 PM.  Please email compeer@nbn.net or call the Compeer office at 272-8317 for more information.  Alternative training times are also available for the convenience of our volunteers.  To apply online, click here.

 Saturday: February 21st & April 17th, 2004  ~  Training II / V.I.P. (Volunteer Information Program) Sessions for all Compeer volunteers will be held at the Alley Family Center from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.  All newly matched volunteers are encouraged to attend to share their new experiences and receive feedback from our “seasoned” volunteers.  Please call the office at 272-8317 to register for these sessions no later than three days prior to the training. A light lunch and refreshments will be served at both training sessions.

Tuesday, February 10th, 2004 ~ All Compeer clients and volunteers, matched or unmatched, are invited to a Compeer Coffee Klatch from 7:00-9:00 PM in the “Fellowship Hall” at St. Mark’s UCC, 426 N. 8th Street, Lebanon, for an evening of fun, board games and refreshments.  Bring your favorite board or card game to share.  Twister[tm] anyone?  You must call 272-8317 at least three days in advance of the Compeer Coffee Klatch to let us know you're coming and to be eligible to win one of two door prizes!  On March 16th we'll have a Movie Night and Trivia Contest from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at St. Mark's.

Places to Go & Things to Do!

Sue Hess, one of our Compeer volunteers offered some suggestions for activities that are fun and worthwhile- yet cost nothing:

  • Tour the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg.

  • Tour the State Capitol building.

  • Walk the walking paths in South Hills Park, Memorial Lake at Fort Indiantown Gap, Lion's Lake, or Stoever's Dam Park.

  • Pack a picnic lunch and sit under a big tree.

  • Attend Women's Health Week, sponsored by the Penn State/Hershey Medical Center during the 1st week of May. It offers a whole week of free seminars related to women's health such as weight, diabetes, surgery, caring for elders, cooking demonstrations, depression, etc.

  • Visit your local library and search the internet, or set up an email account on the library's computers, no charge.

  • Volunteer at a local elementary school.

  • Go to your local township meetings and Mental Health planning meetings to keep abreast of what's happening in your community.

  • Spring/summer/fall/winter clean together!  Wash windows, move furniture, clean out kitchen cabinets, etc.

Indoor/Outdoor Activities

Canal boat rides every 2nd and 4th Sunday, June through September, from 12:30-4:30 PM, boarding at the South Portal.

The Union Canal Tunnel ~ The oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States is located in the 90 acre Union Canal Park.  Designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark in 1970, and a National Historic Landmark in 1994, here the visitor can walk the towpaths along the watered canal, hike the trails through the wooded hill above, or picnic under the trees.  Parking available at 25th & Union Canal Drive, Lebanon. (25th Street behind Ames at Lebanon Valley Mall off Route 422), or above the North-South Portals on Tunnel Hill Road (just 1/4 mile off Route 72 north). Free Admission.

The Stoy Museum ~ One and one-half hour guided tours of three floors of exhibits, including early shops and offices, a one room school house, a rural train station, early Pennsylvania crafted furniture, and fire fighting equipment.  Lebanon County Historical Society, 924 Cumberland St., Lebanon.  HOURS: Sundays, 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm; Mondays, 12:30 pm to 8:00 pm; Tuesday thru Friday, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm; CLOSED on Saturdays & Holidays.   Adult Admission: $3.00   Click here for more information and a calendar of events sponsored by the Lebanon County Historical Society.
